it isn't over until the fat lady sings, and the gryffindor students know exactly how true this is. their common room is behind the painting of the fat lady, and she constantly keeps the students out so that they will watch her sing. the students figure she's either an attention seeker, lonely, or just plain friendly; maybe all three.
